The "why" behind the name "roux"

“You work for who? What’s the name of your company?”

We hear that a lot. We are roux — pronounced just like Roo, the joey from the Winnie the Pooh stories. That’s it -the “x” is silent.

Even so, it trips people up more than we ever expected. We’ve heard “Rux,” “Row,” and everything in between, along with the occasional guess that there’s a hard X sound buried in there somewhere.

So why did we choose a short, often-mispronounced word as our name?

To understand that, you need to know a little about our roots. Our founder, Stefan Speligene, hails from South Louisiana and is very skilled in the kitchen. Every one of us here is a self-proclaimed foodie who genuinely enjoys breaking bread together whenever we can, so it’s only natural that our name would tie back to the food we all love.

A roux is the base of many classic Cajun and Creole dishes, including gumbo, étouffée, and more. It’s made of equal parts fat and flour, and it takes real patience — slow, steady stirring — to get it right.

Rush it, walk away from it, or lose focus, and you risk scorching the whole batch. Without a good roux the dish just doesn’t come together the way

it should. The smell of a roux on the stove is essentially a promise that something delicious is on its way — and that feeling/anticipation is what we provide for our clients.

There’s another layer to the name, too. A roux isn’t just one thing — you can cook it to an entire range of shades and flavors, from a light blonde roux to a deep, almost chocolate-colored one, each suited to a different dish. That

variety feels a bit symbolic of our own team, a mixture of different people, backgrounds, and strengths, all contributing to the same pot.

We see ourselves and what we do as the base of a company’s marketing strategy.

We want to be there at the very beginning, helping build the foundation and get it right, so that the entire dish — in this case, the company — turns out flavorful and successful.

Many companies consider marketing like a garnish: a little seasoning sprinkled on top once everything else is already finished. We don’t see it that way. We believe marketing belongs in the base, not as the garnish.

When strategy is built in from the start, it stays tightly aligned with real business objectives. When marketing is just the sprinkle on top, it’s far too easy for the message to drift out of sync with the mission.

Cooking Up Success, Together

So that’s the story behind roux — our name, our roots, and honestly, our whole approach. We build the base first, keep a core team close, and lean on a wider creative community for everything else, so that every project has something solid to stand on and real people behind it.

We’d love for you to check us out and get to know us. Who knows — we might even cook up some literal gumbo together. Yummy!
